Custom Action: Battle Damage Savage Dragon UPDATED

UDATED: More pictures added.
Back in 2007, Marvel Toys made an action figure of one of my favorite comic characters, The Savage Dragon.  Right away I new I would have to pick up multiples of this figure.  I ended up buying about 4 or 5.  At first I just bought one with a tank top and one shirtless, but once these figures went on clearance I got a few more.  The question was, what was I going to do with all these figures?

Custom Action: Star Wars Shadowtrooper

I knew as soon as a bought a few extra Star Wars Black Series Sandtroopers (at a great Amazon price of only $12 each) that I was going to have to make one of them into some sort of custom.  I figured the quickest and easy one would be one of my personal favorites, a Shadowtrooper.  Nothing too tricky here, I just washed the figure, painted the whole thing gloss black, and applied some silver to the helmet using a silver paint pen.  It was really quick to do and the results are great in person, but photographing black is still pretty tricky for me.

Shadowtroopers were a branch of Imperial shock troopers deployed during the Rise of the Empire era. Shadow Trooper units were deployed on various operations under the command of an Emperor's Shadow Guard. A number of them were used in various skirmishes against Galen Marek. Shadow Trooper armor was laced with durasteel fibers  unlike the stygian-triprismatic polymer material used in the production of the shadow stormtrooper armor.

Lego Ghostbusters Are Almost Here!

In June, Lego is releasing a Ghostbusters set that is exclusive to their Lego Stores and website (priced $49.99).  This is coming to us courtesy of the Cuusoo design project which allowed fans to submit their own Lego designs and have other fans vote to have them become official Lego sets.  Ghostbusters joins fellow 80's movie classic, Back to the Future, as a winning entry which consisted of each of the 4 Ghostbusters and their vehicle the Ecto-1.  The set was submitted by Brent Waller, who recently received one of the first official sets of his design.  He posted a whole series of photos of the new Legos along side his original submittal on his Facebook fan page Lego Ghostbusters and Flickr page.  While there have been some changes, the end result is still very true to the characters and car.  Here are just some of the pictures.

New X-Men Marvel Legends Action Figures?!

The following image has been making the the rounds today of Marvel action figures in a Japanese catalog.  It appears to be a previously unannounced series of Marvel Legends action figures based on X-Men characters.  No word on when or if these are coming out in the U.S..  The figures themselves look pretty good.  The Stryfe and Jubilee  are long requested characters that have yet to receive the Legends treatment.  Storm and Cyclops are sporting new looks.  (Personally, that may be my favorite Cyclops costume.)  Magneto is a new sculpt of his classic costume, the last figure in this outfit was in 2003! Wolverine seems to be the same as the figure that came out this past year, but with a new unmasked head.  I'm looking forward to it, if it does come out.

DC Comics Super-Villain: Bizarro Action Figure Review

Me am not Bizzaro!?

Welcome to HiddenLevel Action Figure Review!  The subject of today's review is DC COMICS SUPER-VILLAINS: BIZARRO ACTION FIGURE from DC Collectibles.  This action figure depicts Bizzaro as he appeared in the DC's recent crossover, Forever Evil.  It was an April release and is retail priced at $24.95US.  Other figures from this line include members of the Crime Syndicate such as Owlman and Ultraman.

In "The New 52" (a reboot of the DC Comics universe), Bizarro is seen in the "Forever Evil" storyline. As a part of "Villains Month" in Superman 23.1, or Bizarro #1, Lex Luthor attempted to splice Superman's DNA with human DNA and decides to inject it into a teenage test subject named Bobby in order to create his personal army of Supermans. Instead, Bobby is transformed into a hulking white-skinned monster with cryonic vision, incendiary breath, and immunity to Kryptonite. Deducing his weakness, Lex kills him with concentrated solar radiation that over saturates the Kryptonian cells causing him to explode. Lex then takes samples of the creature to continue his experiment. This time, Lex Luthor tries to clone a purely Kryptonian body. Five years later, a capsule labeled B-0 is shown. After the Crime Syndicate of America takes over the world, Luthor releases his new clone. Though his transformation has not yet been completed (Luthor comments it needed another five years), he kills a security guard named Otis on Luthor's orders. Luthor is pleased and uses Bizarro in his plan to take the Syndicate down.

I included the above information about Bizarro from his Wikipedia page not only for those of you unfamiliar with the subject of today's review, but also for myself.  Even though I've read every appearance that Bizarro has made in the New DC 52 Universe, I had a really hard time remembering what his deal is.  It's kind of a common occurrence with these new character origins, mostly because the classic origins are so ingrained in my mind and partially because this is DC Comics, so his origin has changed a dozen times since his inception.  Let's get right to the review, shall we?
Sculpt:  This guy looks pretty bad, but in a good way.  Bizarro's skin has rough cracked texture you would expect from this defective clone of Superman, but less of a fractured jigsaw appearance that the classic Bizarro had.  He has much more of a zombie look to him.  It looks really great and very accurate to the the way he has been depicted in the handful of comic book issues that he's been in.

As for his outfit, he is of course sporting his New 52 version of his costume.  Gone is his purple and dark blue reversed Superman costume with tattered cape and #1 plaque around his neck.  Instead we get something that is a bit of a combination between Superman's New 52 first appearance look and his current look.  Bizarro's pants and boots are identical, including the color, to Superman's new armored look.  The shirt he is wearing is meant to be a t-shirt like the one Superman would wear before he got his Kryptonian armor.  The cape looks good and is in a fairly neutral position. The only thing is that they made a bit of an odd sculptural decision to make the logo a raised element.  In the comic, Bizarro just happens to put the shirt on inside out, so what you are seeing is the inside print of the Superman logo.  If anything, the logo should look a bit faded out like you are seeing it through the material of the shirt.  In and industry that usually tries to get away with just printing a logo rather than sculpting it so they can reuse the part for other characters, this decision seems as backwards as Bizarro himself.
Verdict: 8/10 - Great looking sculpt with an odd choice for the logo.

Scale:  The scale for this figure comes out to be somewhere around 6"(1:12) and 7"(1:10) scale.  The figure is listed as being 6.75" tall which seems to be pretty accurate.  He fits in with a lot of the newer DC Collectibles figures.  Many of the older series including the the ones from DC Direct, had a sliding scale that varied from one figure to the next.  Bizarro almost fits in with the Mattel DC Universe figures, he is just about a half head taller than the standard figure.  If you put him in a hunched position, it's not really that noticeable.  For now, I think this is the collection I'll be displaying him in.  At least until I get any other figures from DC Collectibles that he can fit in with.
Verdict: 8/10 - Fits in well with the other figures in his line and can even work with other lines.

Paint:  I have to say that the look of the paint job on this is really pretty great.  The color choices are spot on, from the paint wash that was used to bring out the texture of the skin to the metallic blues and reds used for the lower body.  Right out of the box he was just about perfect.  Maybe even a ten out of ten.  After a while, things changed.

I'm not sure what the problem with the paint is, but it's not holding up well.  Some of the metallic colors have started flaking in spots and the blue of the shirt is rubbing off at the arm  joints.  The ab joint was completely stuck because of the paint, but once I got it to work there was quit a bit of paint rub.  This was really disappointing.
Verdict: 6/10 - The colors are great but, the quality, not so much.

Articulation:  For a DC Collectibles figure, heck, for any action figure the articulation is pretty damn good.  DCC has really stepped up their game lately which is perfect timing to fill the void left by Mattel's DC Universe line coming to and end.  There are joins in the following locations; neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, abs, waist, pelvis, upper thighs, double knees, and ankles.  They all work very well (one the paint comes unstuck) and have a nice range of motion.  I do wish the neck joint allowed him to look straight up so that you could put him in a nice flying position, but what he has isn't too bad.
Verdict: 9/10 - A better range of motion on the neck and some side to side articulation on the ankles would have made it a ten.

Accessories:  Jack squat, nada, zilch.
Verdict: 0/10 - Nothing to judge here.  A base and maybe some alternate hands would have been nice.  Other than that, I'm not sure what they could have included.

Overall:  I have to say, I really like this figure quite a bit.  I when I saw him at a local comic book store that was having a buy one get one free sale on all action figures, I figured I'd pick him up. I'm glad I did and for the price I paid ($12.50) he was a steal.  The lack of accessories didn't really sour my enjoyment of the figure, but the paint issues really hurt.  I hope this is a QC issue that DCC has worked to correct, because if they make more figures like this one, then I'll be sure to add some to my collection.

Trailer for Fox's Gotham is Online

Here is the extended trailer for the upcoming series, Gotham.  It looks like it might be pretty good.  Unfortunately, it's on Fox, so if it is any good it'll be canceled after the first season.  It's a silly nitpick, but I hope Gordon grows a mustache at some point.  He needs it like Batman needs pointy ears.

The Post-Credits X-Men: DOFP Clip from Amazing Spider-Man 2

Here's the scene from X-Men: Days Of Future Past, that was should during the Amazing Spider-Man credits:

Yoda Revealed to be Upcoming Star Wars Black Figure

A new 6" scale Star Wars Black Series figure was revealed on Star Wars Day via the official Star Wars Instagram.  He looks pretty accurate to the original movie version.  It's great that he comes with the lightsaber and the snake, but I wish he came with a bit more.  He's much smaller than the other characters so you don't feel like you're getting as much for your money.  He should at least come with a backpack the Luke can wear to carry him around in.  I'm still excited to get him, he is Yoda after all.

SDCC Exclusive Star Wars Black: Jabba the Hutt with Salacious Crumb

Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive first look at Hasbro's 2014 San Diego Comic Con exclusive The Black Series Jabba The Hutt with Salacious Crumb. It figure fits in with the 6" or 1/12 scale action figures.  Jabba will also be sold in stores but without the Salacious Crumb.   This figure will look great with the already released Slave Outfit Princess Leia.

The figures are packed in a display that recreates the villains throne room lair from Return of the Jedi, including space for last year’s Comic-Con exclusive toy, a Carbonite-frozen Han Solo.
Each year, Hasbro crafts a selection of toys that are exclusive to San Diego’s Comic-Con gathering. Some are later sold on HasbroToyShop.com, but it’s always a limited run. Good luck finding that Solo from last year.
The box also comes with a little Huttese: “Peecha wangee cogh pah. Tong nam nee took chan kee troi. Soo thawt du mah kee chalia.” That translates as: “I will not give up my favorite decoration. I like Captain Solo where he is.”

Erik Laren's take on Amazing Spider-Man 2

Erik Larsen, creator of Savage Dragon and long time artist and writer on Spider-Man in the 80's and 90's, gave a quick review of the Amazing Spider-Man on his Facebook page today.  He also has quite a bit to say about the Sam Rami directed films. Here is what he had to say:

I liked Amazing Spider-Man 2 quite a bit.

Andrew Garfield is such a perfect Peter Parker and he's simply fun to watch. Tobey Maguire never felt like Peter Parker to me and Andrew just nails it--from the build to the hair to the smart ass, goofy demeanor. I wasn't a big fan of the Raimi films--they seemed corny to me--the worst part about the first Amazing Spider-Man, the lining up the cranes just felt like too many scenes in the Raimi films (like the defiant New Yorkers on the subway) and he couldn't keep his mask on for two consecutive seconds--which really was not an issue here. In my eyes Tobey Maguire is like the Romita Peter Parker and Andrew Garfield is the Ditko/McFarlane/Larsen one.

Emma Stone isn't quite Gwen as I pictured her--but her chemistry with Andrew Garfield can't be denied. They're a fantastic screen couple. Kristen Dunst was a dud and their whole relationship felt off to me. And I couldn't understand Peter's obsession with her. Re-watching any of the Raimi films is a chore to me--with way too many groan out loud moments and just general awkwardness--but not in a good way. The new ones seem peppy and fun to me--you felt the love between Peter and his aunt and Peter and his uncle whereas the scene where Cliff Robertson reads aloud the want ads from the newspaper from the first Raimi film just seemed so stilted and wooden.

They did pack in a lot. I wasn't thrilled that everything evil stemmed from Oscorp--but if that means skipping a few origins down the road--I'm all for that. Interesting that they skipped the introduction of J. Jonah Jameson and just had Peter taking pictures for the Bugle without actually having him visit the Bugle. Nice that they wrapped up the mystery with his parents and moved on--plus it gave him a compelling reason NOT to clear their name--lest he reveal himself--that was smart.

My wife always has a succinct and often hilariously uninformed post-movie review in the car. She thought it was corny and too silly but her two quibbles just amused me enough: "They don't serve dim sum at night" and "Jamie Foxx had a gap in his teeth but after he became Electro he didn't have a gap in his teeth" --it seems weird to me that with all of the crazy shit going on--Max Dillon turning into an electrical man--that his teeth getting slightly altered after the change seemed an odd place to draw a line in the sand in regard to her suspension of disbelief. She also said, "So, Harry Osborn becomes the Silver Surfer?" which cracked me up.

I thought the post-credits X-Men scene was an ill-fit. Better to have nothing than an ad for some other film--it just seemed really out of place. I'm torn on the end with Rhino. It seemed a really odd place to leave it but also kind of appropriate. He's a second stringer that couldn't carry a movie and his appearance here kind of said as much. The machine guns seemed a bit weird though. Better just to make him a Rhino guy--having a Rhino that shoots bullets seems tacked on. I wonder if Marvel can stick the Rhino in a Hulk movie? They're already willing to have two versions of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch--why not get him right somewhere?

All in all--happy with how Spider-Man is shaping up. I wish whoever's doing the Fantastic Four could get their shit together. That franchise is in the saddest shape of the current Marvel lot.

Another List Of Spider-Man Costumes

Here's another list of Spider-Man costumes, this from Mashable.com.  It's not quite a complete list (Spider-Man Unlimited, Paperbag Spidey, and Cyborg Spidey are just a few missing) but it's pretty close.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review

You are about to enter spoiler country, proceed with caution.

Spider-Man might possibly be my favorite hero.  He's definitely the the most relatable for me.  I don't know what it's like being a billionaire playboy, an incredibly intelligent scientist, a man thrust into a different time period that is not his own, or an alien from a different planet.  I do however know what it's like trying to make ends meet, deal with relationship problems, and try to balance responsibilities with a social life.  That is what Spider-man/Peter Parker is all about.  I see myself in that character more than any other.  So I'm usually pretty excited when a new Spider-Man movie comes out.

The last few months leading up to the release of the new Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie has been a roller coaster ride.  It seemed like new characters where being announced as being part of the movie on a nearly daily basis.  I worried that there would be just way too much going on.  Then I would see some footage and the video would look slick and action packed.  I would get excited that this would be the best looking Spidey yet, especially with that perfectly comic book accurate costume.  But would the story suffer?  There were already a few more movies announced, I didn't want to be stuck with a Spider-Man I didn't like.

Then reviews started pouring in, some were mixed.  Many were saying the movie was good, but not amazing.  My expectations started to lower.  I really liked the first two Sam Rami directed movies and I thought the third was just okay, but I definitely didn't dislike it as much as most.  The reboot had a lot of potential, I just wish it hadn't wasted so much time retelling the origin story, especially when the changes just seem to be there simply to be different.  I was now excepting this sequel to possibly be my least favorite.  I went into the theater hoping that I would at least like something about the movie.

As luck would have it, I got the best Spider-Man ever!  No no, don't get me wrong.  I don't think it's the best Spider-Man movie ever, I think it's the best portrayal of the character we have ever gotten.  Andrew Garfield plays the perfect Peter Parker.  It just gets the right level of likable, wise-ass, quirky, responsibility driven every-man that the character should be.  The guy just knocks it out of the park.

I would love to see a movie where Peter Parker takes an internship at Stark Industries as one of Tony Stark's assistants. As long as they are played by Andrew Garfield and Robert Downey Jr.  I'm sure I would like every scene with the two them together in their civilian roles even more than their heroic identities.  Garfield now owns Spidey, like Downey owns his role as Iron Man.

As for the rest of the movie, the good out weighs the bad.  Emma Stone is Gwen Stacy the way Andrew Garfield is Peter Parker, spot on.  I completely believed the chemistry those two had.  I wish them the best of luck in their real lives (the 2 actors are currently dating), because they just seem to belong together.  Two other actors that shine in their roles are Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn and Sally Field as Aunt May.  Their relationships felt real.  I could really believe that this was the Aunt May that had raised Peter.  Harry and Peter's friendship felt genuine…at least until things turned.

And there lies the problem with this movie, the damn villains.  The problem is not exclusive to this movie.  All the villains in the Spider-Man movie franchise suffer from not being very good. I don't really blame the actors in most cases; Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, these are people that have proven they can act.  They just get put in these roles that involve poor choices. Usually the motivations behind the villains are really weak. Electro goes from loving Spider-Man to hating him because he forgot his name.  The guy wants to murder people because a guy he met for 2 seconds forgot his friggin' name!?  If I was him I'd be amazed that Spidey remembered as much about him as he does!

Harry Osborn's motivation is nearly as bad.  He just makes this giant leap in logic that Spider-Man's blood is just some magic cure all.  His dad leaves him all kinds of resources to help prolong his live, but he just ignore all of that and believes that Spider-Man must give him his blood or die.  When he does get his "cure" he has no interest in testing it or anything, just has it jammed into his veins.  What's the worst that could happen ?  Oh yeah, you could become a lackluster "Evil Villain" that serves very little purpose in the movie other than doing one thing that he is well known for doing in the comics.

Then there are are the other "bad guys."  Alistair Smythe is just a dochie jerk, Dr. Ashley Kafka seems like he came out of a Schumacher Batman movie, and Aleksei Sytseviche (the Rhino) seems like a corny cartoon character.  To be clear, I have no problem with the Rhino mech suit, I just think Paul Giamatti hams it up way too much.  Plus, for a movie with some great special effects, Giamatti looks poorly Photoshopped into that Rhino suit.  It's pretty bad.  I do love the scene at the end with the kid though.  That's how Spidey makes the kid in me feel.  Inspired to be strong.

There are a lot of other things I could pick apart, but I'm happy with the Spider-Man I got in this movie if not the villains.  At least he did a good job of trying to protect those around him, (unlike some blue and red clad superheroes) with one notable and unfortunate exception.
