Fist of The North Star (Hokuto No Ken)

SolidMike and I decided to put together a beginners guide to Anime for all those newbies who are just getting into it.  I figured to best start of this series would be to interview one of my personal favorites, "Fist of the North Star".

Why this anime has become my favorite is not just merely the fact that the main hero, Kenshiro (from where I get my name), can destroy enemies with a single blow, it's also a love story and family feud mixed in.  It's also where I learned that we could severely mess up our world by nuclear wars if we're not too careful.

There's been many versions of this anime created, sequels made, video games, and a horribly done live action version which has an interesting cast of characters like Malcolm McDowell, Downtown Julie Brown, Chris Penn and wrestling great Big Van Vader (watch it here while it lasts).  The one that I'm particularly fond of though is the 80's anime version.  It's such a classic with it's over the top violence, crappy dialog, and awesome 80's cartoon styling.

It's starts out with a quick lesson of Yin and Yang, Creation and Oblivion, Light and Dark.  "When the pendulum of life swings towards one, it must swing back towards it's opposite and thus balance of the universe is maintained."

A nuclear war breaks out, destroying the world and sending everyone back into the stone age of existence.  It's a dog eat dog world where only the strong survive.  Well, the strong and the guys who know how to make your head explode with one hit.  Enter
our hero, Kenshiro who is out on a lovely post-nuclear war stroll with his girl, Julia, when the Fist of the South, Shin, appears.  He tells Kenshiro aka Ken that Julia is his now because only the strong can survive and he is the strongest.  They fight, obviously, and Ken loses as he wasn't prepared to fight his ex-best friend.  Julia says she won't go willingly with Shin and Shin decides to change he mind by POKING HIS FINGERS into Ken's chest and by doing so makes a star pattern that looks like the big dipper!  Ken gets tossed into a ditch by his own brother Jagi, who has his own hidden evil plot, and left for dead.

Years later, I think, or maybe just a few days later I'm not sure.  Ken awakes when he hears a young girl crying out for help.  Now all of a sudden, Ken is like a mindless Golem destroying everything in his path and quickly disperses the evil gang that was hurting the young girl.  Ken vows revenge and to find his woman, Julia.

The story just keeps getting better by Ken fighting huge HUGE men that I'm guessing somehow have become mutated by the nuclear war.  He fights his own older brother Rao who has a huge army of his own and his own quest of world domination to complete.  SPOLIER ALERT, KINDA: They get into an awesome one on one fight at the end which is just a must see for all.

This anime started it all for me and I hope it does the same for you.  When you have about an hour and a half to kill, watch Kenshiro kill hundreds of men with his super 100 fist punch which I know is unnecessary if you can just punch a guy once and make his head explode.  "You're already dead!"

You are already dead.

Gaiking the Live action movie?

I'm pretty sure this is a fan made film but it'd be great if it was real.  I've been scouring the internet to see if it's an actual thing but no luck especially since it was uploaded in 2010.  Anyone have any ideas?

Sailor Moon's New Transformation Compared to Old

Sailor Moon

Now let me show you with this video how good the first transformation was of Sailor Moon (see video below).

You can see how she uses the magic of the Silver Crystal and the movements of her body are smooth and natural.  As for the second one, everything goes fine until her arm looks like it is made of elastic, slaps you in the face and then 3D till the end.

As I mentioned in a previous post the white pins in her hair are from Sailor Moon Super S and her neckless has the same pendant than her ribbon, that is too much for me.  I'm not saying "Oh my god what have you done to her!!"  I just want to show you the differences that are not huge but makes a difference.  I hope they don't make any other added changes as try to keep it close to the anime.

Check the video and let me know what you think! :D

Mazinger Metal Action No. 03: Jet Pilder

One of the things I always loved as a kid about the old Mazinger cartoon was the fact that the main pilot got to ride around on a sweet looking jet/flying car type thing. Not only that, but when a situation arose where he needed a big, fist-firing robot to take care of business, he would just land that bad boy right in the robot's head and be in total control. I vowed that if I one day found myself super-rich, I would make my helicopter landing pad look like the head of a Mazinger.

There's a new Mazinger Z in town: Updated with more Pics

There's a new re-imagining of Mazinger Z and with the blessings from Go Nagai, the original series Author, he looks ready to kick butt.

This version of Mazinger Z is being distributed by Good Smile Company and was created by threezero, a sister company of threeA to which if you haven't seen either of the stuff these guys create you should click those two little links.  The new Mazinger Z was given a more Frankenstein-ish look, with a painted rustic tone that gives you the feeling like he's gone thru hell and lived to tell the tale.  The figure stands at 16" tall and is fully articulated down to the fingers.

My initial feelings of the revision are that he looks kinda clunky but in a cool way.  I prefer the older original Mazinger Z as the inner kid in me just loves his sleek and mechanical look.  This one on the other hand will probably eventually win me over especially with his cool slicer blades that actually close.

I can't unfortunately give a full review of the product as it's a bit on the pricy side, about $300.  So if there are any nice people out there who would like to donate a little bit of money or just full out buy me this lovely piece I'd love to do a full review of him.  Until then, I'll be saving 1 penny every day which by my calculations will take about 82 years, without calculating inflation, before I can purchase this cool figure.
Back at ya buddy!

Throwback Thursday: Mutilor

One of my very favorite cartoons as a kid was Voltron: Defender of the Universe.  The 12" action figure of Voltron was also one of my favorite toys.  Another figure from that line that I had a special fondness for was Mutilor.  He was a Robeast* that was meant to be a villain to the heroic Voltron Force.  The main problem with the figure was that it wasn't remotely close in size to either of the Voltron figures that I had so he didn't make for a very good rival.  This did stop me from enjoying the figure.  I was constantly using him to battle G.I. Joes or my Wolverine Toy Biz figure.  It played with that thing until he was beat to hell; thumb broken off and paint chipped away.  I long ago lost that little guy.

The other day, the same day I found the the E.T. Atari game, I also found my wife's (or her sister's) Mutilor figure and it was in perfect condition!  All this old memories rushed back.  He is now proudly displayed next to my other Voltron toys, with his eyes on my G.I. Joe display.

Games: G-dammit I want this game. Here. Now.

J-Stars Victory VS (you're going to need to be able to read Japanese for the site link) is every anime/manga person's dream.  Although I've heard some unsettling news that it does get old after a while but what game doesn't.  The only reason why you would want it is because it has all or mostly all or a couple of your favorite anime characters beating the crap out of each other.  You just have to get over the fact that even though some characters (Goku, Vegeta, Kenshiro just to name a few) have godlike powers that could destroy entire cities with a flick of a finger, sure they could still fight a baby like character and not destroy it...at all.

You can order this game from Amazon.com or any other Japanese site and it WILL play on your American PS3 or Vita console but it'll still all be in Japanese.  This game needs definitely needs to come to the US...now...right now.  Forget the translating, it's not going to translate over very well anyway.  I just want to be able to play my favorite characters and beat the crap out of all the rest of them, for about an hour or so. - Kevshiro

Anime: Where is the next Berserk movie??

GATSUUU!!!   WHERE ARE YOU???

I know all fans of the Berserk manga/anime/movie are all eagerly awaiting the next arrival of the revised movie series but when will that be?  1 year, 2 years?  Who knows?

Fans of the Anime series all know about the suspense they kept us in when the anime ended with a huge surprise (NSFW SPOLIER!!!) then just up and stopped making any more anime of the series.  Then after watching the newly revamped Golden Age Arc trilogy it ended almost the same way as the anime, keeping us in suspense yet again.  These guys just love building up the anticipation but come on, don't keep us waiting any longer.

 berserk-vol15

If you can't wait, like me, you'll have to take to a book and follow the story there.  If you don't want to go back, which you should read all the manga series as it's definitely worth the read, you can start on Volume 15 which will take you to right after where both the anime and movies end off.

Will Guts ever get his revenge?  Will Caska ever be normal again?  Will the world ever go back to normal?  Will guts get an even bigger sword!!!????  This guy hopes he will. - Kevshiro
