Jump the Gun: Jupiter Ascending

Jump the Gun is a semi-weekly article where two or more HiddenLevel contributors voice their gut reactions to upcoming movies. Their opinions are based solely on what trailers, press releases, and information is available around the internet, oh, and of course their own personal bias towards the source material. None of the opinions are based on actually having watched the movie. Each reviewer retains the right to change their view after having watched the movie, if they ever bother to do so. After all, who wants to waste their money on a movie that looks like it’s going to suck? Unless you’re into that kind of thing.

Jupiter Ascending

(July 18, 2014)
(Feburary 6, 2015)

Movie Summary: A lowly Earth woman finds out she has claim to Royalty of the Universe and the current Royalty wish her dead.

Brunpuppies - I just don’t know if I care about this movie at all.  There are just too many other movies coming out that I really want to see that this hasn’t drawn much of my attention.  I guess if word of mouth behind it gets really strong I might take a look.

Verdict - Someday, maybe.

Kevshiro -  After a long, long hold they're finally releasing this movie and after all the fixes the trailer still hasn’t really done that much for me.  I look at it and I’m like, well I might be more interested if Mila Kunis has super powers but it looks like it’s really not that interesting right now.  Of course, if she get’s naked at some point during the film I’ll be glad to take a look, I mean, review this film in depth.  I’m sure there’s more to this film than just what is shown in the trailer so I think I’ll be waiting patiently for this one to come out on DVD.

Verdict - DVD for me.

SolidMike - Absolutely not, when I first saw this trailer I thought it was going to be another advertisement for a Verizon phone or something. To my surprise, I was wrong and kind of wish now that it was a commercial for a phone.

Verdict - Are you kidding me?

Jump the Gun: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

(August 22, 2014)

Story: Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller's visually stunning “Sin City” graphic novels back to the screen in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales, the town's most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the follow up to Rodriguez and Miller’s 2005 groundbreaking film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY.

Brunpuppies - Much like 300: Rise of an Empire earlier this year, this movie seems a little late to capitalize on the originals success.  This movie really should have come out years ago.  Certainly before the downward spiral that Frank Miller’s career has been.  It’s hard to be a fan of Miller with the taste of his work on The Spirit, Holy Terror, and All-Star Batman and Robin still in my mouth.  (Okay, so I admit, I had fun with the Goddamn Batman, it just seemed like it was written by a crazy greek writing fanfic rather than the man that helped define the character in the 80’s.)
Either way, it’s great that this movie is finally coming out because I was a huge fan of the original.  Marv is just one of my favorite onscreen tough guys and I hope we get plenty more of him in this next installment.

Verdict - Opening night if I can convince my wife.
Kevshiro -  So it’s a little late to be bringing this movie out but man the trailer looks great.  I loved the first Sin City and I hope this one will live up to the hype.  Wait a minute.  Is there any hype for this film?  God I hope it doesn’t pass in and out of theaters with people going, “did that movie come out”, like I’ve done with a few movies in the past few months.

Verdict - I’m going to try to catch it in theaters, if I remember

SolidMike - The first Sin City was really good and I’m super excited that the sequel is upon us. My only complaint is that Clive Owen has been replaced by Josh Brolin, not that he’s bad pick, but I really enjoyed Owen’s character in the first film.

For the life of me I can’t think of any other movie Clive Owen is doing now for him not to recur his role in the new Sin City film, but whatever, I’m still going to see this movie no matter what.

Verdict - Will see in theaters

Jump the Gun: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Jump the Gun is a semi-weekly article where two or more HiddenLevel contributors voice their gut reactions to upcoming movies. Their opinions are based solely on what trailers, press releases, and information is available around the internet, oh, and of course their own personal bias towards the source material. None of the opinions are based on actually having watched the movie. Each reviewer retains the right to change their view after having watched the movie, if they ever bother to do so. After all, who wants to waste their money on a movie that looks like it’s going to suck? Unless you’re into that kind of thing.

(August 8, 2014)

Movie Summary: 4 Mutant Ninja Warriors save the city from the Foot Clan and their evil kingpin Shredder.

Brunpuppies - Gawddamnit!  Why can’t this movie look good?!  I love the Ninja Turtles, but this friggin’ thing looks like such a steaming pile of turds.
In the late 80’s I had Turtlemania big time and I just had to have every action figure and comic book featuring the green teens that I could.  The first movie is still one of my all time favorite comic book movies.  My love for the Turtles faded a bit by the time the third movie came out, to the point where I don’t think I saw it until it was on basic cable.  I didn’t really take much interest in them when they made their comeback in the early 2000’s although I was really happy when the TMNT movie came out, especially since it featured Casey Jones.  Recently the Turtle Power has surged back into me due to the highly entertaining IDW comic and the outstanding Nickelodeon cartoon.
The monstrosity produced by nostalgia crushing tyrant, Michael Bay, just looks, well…...crappy.  I have all the usual fanboy issues;  Why do the Turtles have lips and noses?  Why are they so f**cking HUGE?  Why is Shredder some white dude?  You mean to tell me Shredder created the Turtles with April’s dad?  Johnny Knoxville is the voice of who? Where the hell is Casey Jones?! It just seems like anytime there is more news on this movie it gets worse and worse.  It just doesn’t make sense considering there are two awesome versions of the Turtles that exist in the comics and TV that they can draw inspiration from, yet instead we get Monk doing the voice of Splinter.
It’s a damn travesty.

Verdict - I’ll see it in theaters because I secretly hate myself and because I LOVE BEING A TURTLE-fan!

Kevshiro -  What have they done to you all.  A revamp of the story.  Really.  Did the TMNT really need a revamp or re-imagining at this point.  God no!  Stick to the story.  Yeah, the original was kinda hard to believe but that’s what we grew up with and that’s what we want.  I say we start a law, yes a law.  that says, no movie studio can recreate a film unless 100 years has passed.  That way, all the people who grew up loving the characters and films have died off and a new breed of people can start a new story.  Kinda like what they did with the bible back in the day.  You had the Old Testament God.  And the new one.  Nevertheless because I just have to see what kind of awful crap they’ve created, I will plop down my hard earned cash to see what a mess they’ve made of it.

Verdict - I love pain!!! Put me in the theater seat.
SolidMike - I strongly disagree with both Kev and Bruno on this one. This movie is going to be a complete train wreck. The story and the characters are way off when its compared to the original story, so I will definitely pass on this one.

Verdict- Hell “to the” No

Jump the Gun: The Expendables 3

Jump the Gun is a semi-weekly article where two or more HiddenLevel contributors voice their gut reactions to upcoming movies. Their opinions are based solely on what trailers, press releases, and information is available around the internet, oh, and of course their own personal bias towards the source material. None of the opinions are based on actually having watched the movie. Each reviewer retains the right to change their view after having watched the movie, if they ever bother to do so. After all, who wants to waste their money on a movie that looks like it’s going to suck? Unless you’re into that kind of thing.

(August 15, 2014)

Story: Barney and his team, known as "The Expendables", come into conflict with ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks, the Expendables' co-founder, who is determined to destroy the team.

Brunpuppies - I really wanted the first two movies to work for me, but they just didn’t.  I assume the actors had a lot of fun getting together to make these “action packed” films, but their fun didn’t translate over for me.  Just having these big name action stars together in one movie doesn’t get me to buy a ticket especially when many of them are past their prime.  Seeing Sly and Arnold in a movie together just reminds me of how awesome a Contra movie starring the two would have been...25 years ago.  Adding Mad Max, Indiana Jones, and Blade to the mix just reinforces the feeling of this being an Over the Hill Action Vehicle.  Although it is nice to see Snipes out of prison.

Verdict - I’m just going to have to pass on this one.  I might check it out if it ends up on Netflix or FX on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Kevshiro -  Can’t really go by much but his last 2 films were pretty fun to watch.  Yeah, sure it’s a bunch of old men in diapers that used to be action stars but hey, it’s fun to watch them try to jump a moving vehicle and possibly break a femur.  I know, I know, it’s all stunt doubles nowadays.  So let’s play a drinking game of how many times you can spot the doubles!  Ah well, this shit is fun to watch so let’s sit back together, in our home, and see what jail has done to Wesley Snipes.

Verdict - DVD
SolidMike - I’m going to keep this short and sweet, I never seen any of the “Expendables” films and I’m not going to start now.

Verdict - Never

Jump the Gun: Lucy

(July 25, 2014)

Story: A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.
Brunpuppies - The trailer looked interesting.  It hasn’t really sold me on seeing it yet, but it was at least a good first impression.  It kind of seems like ScarJo is a little jealous that she didn’t get superpowers in the Avengers and now she gets to go all out.  I do have to say that the whole “using more than 10% of your brain” card is totally getting played out, not to mention completely inaccurate.

Verdict - I’ll see how I feel when it comes out.  Most likely a watch on TV movie
Kevshiro - Scarlet, you have my attention.  Although the whole human mind achieving 100% is not really what I’m looking at here.  I’m pretty sure you don’t get super powers when you get to explore your mind further but whatever.  Seeing Scarlet kicking ass is what I like and I’m curious to see what happens to her, although I’m not sure if I’m that curious to see it in theaters.  I think this will be a DVD, beer and pizza kinda night.

Verdict - DVD
SolidMike - Hollywood must think the average consumer is a complete moron. After seeing the trailer I realized that this is the same exact story from the movie “Limitless” that starred Bradley Cooper. The only difference is that sexy Scarlett Johansson is in it, but is that enough for me to go see this movie? No it’s not.

Verdict - Netflix

Jump the Gun: Transformers - Age of Extinction

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction

(June 27, 2014)

Movie Summary: The Autobots, after defending the earth against the Decepticons, find themselves no longer needed.  Now a new threat has arrived and the Autobots must recruit new friends to face this new menace.

Brunpuppies - They went and made another one.  And they added robot dinosaurs.  And because it’s Michael Bay, they’re way bigger than they need to be.  Like old Godzilla big, not new Godzilla.  I really hope this movie turns out to be at least somewhat good. Based on, the other Transformer movies I don’t have my hopes set too high, but at least the Buff isn’t in this one, so that’s a good start.  If Godzilla fills the big monster craving the Pacific Rim left me with, I guess this will have to fill the big robot hankering.

Verdict - Will see in theaters to see Grimlock SMASH!

Kevshiro -  So Optimus Prime is riding Grimlock.  I didn’t even think most dinosaurs were that big back in the prehistoric times as I’m pretty sure Optimus Prime is very large as well, so he can’t ride Grimlock.  None the less, I’m really excited to see this film because well, duh Dinobots!!!  Even though it looks like they skipped one of my favorites Sludge, the Apatosaurus (Brontosaurus for those who think every dinosaur with a long neck has that name).  Also am really glad for the new casting as well.  Bye Bye, Mr. talk so fast that you can’t comprehend what they hell he is saying, I’m sure you know who I mean.  Welcome Marky Mark and his Funky Bunch to the Transformers movies, I’m really hopeful he can add more to the transformers films, as I”m sure they’ll be more to come.

Verdict - My butt is in the theater seat.

SolidMike - You know, it’s getting difficult keeping up with the Transformer films. After seeing the second film and realizing how bad of a movie it was, I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the third entry and now here we are again with the fourth film on the horizon.
With that being said, the trailer looks action packed and even has robot dinosaurs in it that are huge! I would be lying to myself to say that I wasn’t moved by this trailer even though it had Michael Bay written all over it with unnecessary explosions.

Verdict - Will go see in theaters.

Jump the Gun: Hercules

Jump the Gun is a semi-weekly article where two or more HiddenLevel contributors voice their gut reactions to upcoming movies. Their opinions are based solely on what trailers, press releases, and information is available around the internet, oh, and of course their own personal bias towards the source material. None of the opinions are based on actually having watched the movie. Each reviewer retains the right to change their view after having watched the movie, if they ever bother to do so. After all, who wants to waste their money on a movie that looks like it’s going to suck? Unless you’re into that kind of thing.

Hercules

(July 25, 2014)

Movie Summary: Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) is Hercules.

Brunpuppies - I really kind of wish this was a Marvel movie and that we were getting that version of the demigod.  His character in the comic is pretty great and it would be awesome to have his rivalry with Thor up on the big screen.  This movie is based on a graphic novel, just not the one I had hoped.  Instead we are getting an adaption of Hercules: The Thracian Wars.  I haven’t read it yet, but it’s been added to my very long read list now that the movie is due to come out.
Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson seems built (pun intended) for this role and I think he could pull off making this a fun flick.  I really hope he gets a chance to really own this role and be the person you think of when someone says the name Hercules the way people think Arnold when you hear the name Conan the Barbarian.

Verdict - Probably not in theaters, but will watch on the small screen.

Kevshiro - I’m going to have to agree with Brunpuppies on this one.  Hercules back in the day would have been great to see.  Nowadays with all the marvel comic movies around.  Hercules by himself in a  movie, is just not that interesting to me anymore.  Believe me, I was a huge Hercules fan when I was younger.  I had a few of the books and saw all the old school films.  All the feats of strength and obstacles he had to overcome were all such great stories.  Nowadays though, it’s just not that interesting anymore to me.

Verdict - TV

SolidMike - I’m a huge a fan of mythology and somewhat of a fan to Dwayne Johnson. If anything, I’m more interested to see what mythical creatures will be in the film. While I do think Johnson did an ok job in the Scorpion King, him playing as Hercules really doesn’t do anything for me, because both characters are really similar…..ok Hercules is definitely bigger, but they both shop at the same clothing store. In any case, this definitely looks like a fun movie to watch for the summer.

Verdict - Will see in the theaters.
