Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 5 Review

Game of Thrones Season Four Episode Five Review

This review contains spoilers.

So far this season I've been a little disappointed with the pacing, I've found it to be rather slow in each individual episode.  I do have to admit though that I've read pretty far past the point of where we are in the TV episodes so I know what the future holds, and without saying too much, the future holds quite a bit of drama and action.  So maybe I'm just being too picky and impatient as a fan of the books.

That being said, this episode had plenty to offer and covered a bunch of characters.  You get to see a bit more of Arya and the Hound and their weird " I hate you but I kind of need/care for you" relationship but not much else happens with them.  Not much happens with Dany either, other than she has another chance to sail to Westoros but refuses after hearing all her work freeing slaves in other cities is essentially being undone.  We also get a little bit of time with Podrick and Brienne, where most of the time she is just baffled at how poor a squire Pod is and keeps trying to rid herself of him.  By the end of their story in this episode however, Brienne gains some respect for him after learning how he saved Tyrion in the defense of Kings Landing.  And we also get a bit of Cersei, and it seems like the writers are trying to build more sympathy with her this week as well by giving her a conversation with Prince Oberyn about how much she misses her daughter who was sent to Dorne by Tyrion.  In my personal opinion, Cersei is just plain evil and doesn't really deserve much sympathy (which is a little hard now after being raped...).

The final two sets of characters (Sansa Jon Snow/Brandon) that get covered is where the episode is really enjoyable.  Sansa reaches the vale, where we get another peek crazy Lysa Arryn and her weird son Robin.  Lysa and Petyr Baelish get married and have quite the wedding night, or at least Lysa does...  But the what's more important is we find out that Lysa was actually the one who poisoned her husband Jon Arryn, King Robert's Hand from season one, under the direction of Petyr.  More evidence of how little credit the other characters give him.  Now up beyond the Wall, Brandon and friends become captured by the Watch's mutinous deserters at Craster's Keep.  Jon Snow leads a raiding party to kill the traitors, where we get a pretty awesome sequence of fighting scenes.  In the mayhem Brandon and friends know it's Jon fighting but decide to move on, fearing that Jon will refuse to let them go find the three eyed crow.  In the fighting though, Brandon takes control of Hodor and snaps the neck of a rogue brother from Jon's party which is pretty awesome when it happens.  Jon gets a really cool 1 vs. 1 against Karl (the leader guy of the traitors) and stabs him through the back of the head,  the death is  very walker-esque from the Walking Dead.

We're halfway through the season and it seems like things are picking up, which is always a good thing, so watch this episode if haven't already.
