In the aftermath of ALL-OUT WAR we discover… A NEW BEGINNING.
Wait, what? 48 PAGES?! That’s right. TWD 127, the first issue following ALL OUT WAR, will be double-sized! What do you make of that?! At least one thing about that cover is jumping out at me…

This review contains spoilers.

Let me start by saying I used to read almost forty titles a month when I was really into reading comics, but unfortunately I stopped for about the past year.  So now that I've started reading again one of my go to titles was of course, The Walking Dead.  Now jumping back in after a year i felt pretty lost and read the previous story arc All Out War, and boy oh boy did I forget how much The Walking Dead really hooks you in.

So now here we are at issue 127, and things are pretty different.  The issue starts off with a group of new people that we haven't seen before riding a shipping crate that is being pulled along by a team of horses, and immediately they are being over run by a MASSIVE herd of walkers.  They get rescued by a group on horseback (there are a lot of horses in this issue), who are herding the walkers like cattle.  Now I'm not sure if you're not supposed to know who the herders are right away or if it was just me not recognizing the characters, but the herders turn out to be Jesus (who now looks like a feudal Samurai warrior) and some people from Alexandria and the Hilltop, including Eugene who's created what can be described as like a medieval war horn to help direct the herd of walkers.  They go through the usual process of bringing people in and show them Alexandria, where it seems that quite some time has passed since the end of All Out War.  There are people, gardens, even a hotel being built for a future fair (and even more horses... I don't really know where they got all these horses from but this issue is perfect for that girl from third grade who's obsessed with horses).

Hey look, horses.

When we get to Rick, we really get a sense of how much has changed.  He's grown out a decent sized beard and has like a buzzcut going on, sports a spiffy prosthetic hand/hook, and now needs a cane for his leg after Negan broke it in the war.  Alexandria seems more like society now with people in charge of different aspects of the community like farming, making ammunition, construction, herding, etc, while Rick takes an almost presidential role meeting with each to check on progress.  Carl is where things to really have changed.  He looks older and taller and now wears glasses with one lense blacked out instead of an eyepatch, and even refers to Andrea now as mom.  Through out the issue he keeps asking Rick to talk, and its because he wants to move to the hilltop to learn to blacksmith under Earl Sutton, to which Rick is unsurprisingly hesitant to allow and tells him he'll think about it.

The issue ends with Carl speaking to an unknown person in the dark about the day and his talk with Rick.  The person he's speaking to seems to be a role model for him and is very understanding, but as the issue ends, we get to see who Carl was talking to on the second to last panel.... and it's Negan in a jail cell, who asks Carl after all they've been through now if he still wants to kill him to which Carl replies,  "yes Negan. You know I do."  And all when it seemed like Carl wasn't so crazy after all, he has this weird love/hate relationship with Negan.

Overall I'm a bit undecided on this issue, so much is different and so much seems perfect and happy for everyone.  I don't know if it's my own desire for destruction or if The Walking Dead has just taught me to expect bad things to happen, but I can't shake the feeling that this happiness will only last a short time before it all comes crashing down again.  Maybe I'm stretching a bit far with this one too, but it seems as if Rick's time could be drawing to a close.  He's still pretty beat up from the war and it seems as if a good amount of time has passed since then, and now Carl is more of an adult, could it be that Rick's death is in the works and maybe Carl will be the new "main" character?  This is just my own speculation here. I have nothing to really back this up, it's just that we know anyone can die in the Walking Dead and so far Rick and Carl seem to be excluded from this but no really shocking deaths have occurred since Glenn's death.  But hey, if Rick is anything, he's a survivor so maybe I'm totally off on this.

Pretty much, this is a decent issue of The Walking Dead.  It shakes things up a bit, and its pretty big change of pace after All Out War.  It's still worth checking out however as it starts a whole new story arc.
