Good Smile The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Link Figma Action Figure Review

Today's review is of Good Smile The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Link Figma Action Figure. Wow, that's a mouthful.  This a bit of a retro / throwback review, not because this figure is about a year old now, but because this is a character that my interest in comes almost exclusively from the 1986 Legend of Zelda game for NES.  Other than the 1987 sequel, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, I haven't really played any other Zelda game.  This hasn't stopped me from having a huge fondness for the character, Link.  As a matter of fact, a couple months ago when I first ordered this figure, my wife and I were playing that original game and loving every second of it.  For the record, it took us less than 2 days to complete the first quest.  My eight year old self took about a year to do it.

Product Description:

From Good Smile Company. From the popular video game series' newest addition, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, comes a figma of the main character of the series, Link. Using the smooth yet poseable joints of figma, you can act out a variety of different scenes. A flexible plastic is used for important areas, allowing proportions to be kept without compromising possibility. He comes with his standard gallant expression, as well as a powerful shouting face for combat poses. The Master Sword as well as the Hylian Shield are both included. They can also be carried on his back as they did in the game. A poseable figma stand is included, which allows various poses to be taken.

Sculpt:  The sculpt is great on this figure.  It looks like it stepped right out of the video game art. There is plenty of detail yet the figure maintains a nice cartoony, almost anime look to it.  This is not a toy that has a whole lot of textures going on but, considering the subject matter, it doesn't need it. Every detail on the outfit that needs to be there, is there.  It's just a really nice, clean looking action figure.

Verdict: 10/10 - I don't look at this sculpt and see a thing I would change.

Scale:  For me, this figure is the optimal scaled.  I'm a huge 1/12 (6 inch) action figure collector and this guy fits in perfectly.  He's just over 5 inches tall but when you put him next to a Marvel Legend or a DC Universe figure, he fits in just right.  He's shorter than most figures, but seems appropriate considering he is a young man and has never been depicted as having large heroic proportions. All the proportions work nicely to give you a nice, evenly balance action figure.

Everything Link comes with is scaled to work just right with the figure. There are no cartoonishly over-sized weapons or ill fitting cloth clothing.

Verdict: 10/10 - Again, not a thing I would change.  Your mileage may vary if 1/12 scale is not your preference.

Paint:  (You're going to notice a trend with this Link toy.)  The paint is perfect on this figure.  There is no paint slop, the colors are vibrant, accurate, and consistent. The majority of the figure is cast in the color it needs to be rather than painted, but even in that case, the plastic that is used is the exact colors that are needed.  The face(s), which has(have) the most paint applications, looks crisp and clean.

On the accessories, all the paint applications really pop.  The sword and shield use a variety of metallic and primary colors that just make them sing.  Even the the straps and handle on the back of the shields get the paint applications that probably would have been skipped on most toys.

Verdict: 10/10 - Yep, again.

Articulation:  He freakin' hat is articulated.  That should give you some sense of how much articulation there is on this figure.  Quite a bit.
I spent a lot of time posing Link during the photoshoot for this article and I was able to get him into quite a few poses.  Whether he is in an attack stance or just standing around, he just looked very natural.  All the joints have a great range and are tight enough to hold almost any pose.

The articulation includes:

  • Ball-jointed neck
  • Swivel hat
  • Ball-jointed shoulders
  • Double-jointed elbows
  • Hinge and swivel wrists
  • Ball-Jointed torso
  • Ball-jointed hips
  • Double-jointed knees
  • Swivel at the top of the boots
  • Ball-joint and rocker at the ankles
  • Hinged toes

Phew! That's more than enough for a figure this size.

Verdict: 10/10 - Still looking for a complaint.

Accessories:  As with everything else, all the accessories are phenomenal.  I promise to come up with some gripes in a few seconds.

  • The Master Sword - A thing of beauty. Looks just as it should. The end of the handle pops off so that the sword can slip into the figure's hand
  • Slash Effect - Made of clear light blue plastic. Fits over sword nicely and make the figure look dynamic.
  • Sheath - Great gold details and sculpt. The peg fits tight into the figure.
  • The Hylian Shield - Again, great paint and sculpt.  The straps and handle pop out and can be placed in different positions as needed.
  • 2 different faces - 1 calm, 1 yelling. It's tough to decide which one to display him with.
  • 2 sets of bangs (hair) - They don't look all that different form one another.  One just shows a little more motion.
  • 10 sets of hands - 2 Fists, 2 open palm, 2 spread fingered, 2 gripped, & 2 angled grip.
  • Figma stand with posing arm - Also includes adapter piece.  This accessory is very useful to have.  It allows to pose the figure in all kinds of mid air stances.
(A word of caution, some parts are really small and could get lost easily, and the sword is very delicate so handle with care)

The awesomeness of this figure has kind of made me a little greedy.  It makes me want even more accessories.  Maybe a bow and arrow, hands with different rings, a boomerang, a wand, a candle, or maybe even some rupees.  I want it all!

Verdict: 9.5/10 - Sorry, but it looses half a point for leaving me wanting more.

Overall:  This toy was my very first Figma action figure. The price had always kept me away considering each figure is usually around $40 to $60 dollars.  I'd been eyeballing this figure for awhile because of my love of the character so the second I saw a sale that had him for just under $35, I just had to buy him.

Worth every penny.

I'm not going to start a Figma collection any time soon because there is no way I can afford to, but now the temptation is greater than ever.  I'm much more likely to get one if it's a character I really want. As for this one, I'm very happy.  He is highly recommended if you're a Zelda fan.

Verdict: 10/10 - Perfect, now give me more!
