NECA Robocop: ED-209 Action Figure Review

One of my favorite movies as a kid was Robocop. But I didn't watch it because of Robocop but because of Ed-209. I don't know why but I loved this guy. I'm not sure if it was because of his size, his no nonsense demeanor or because even though he was this huge beast of a machine, he couldn't walk down stairs.

NECA Product Description:  One of the most eagerly anticipated action figures of all time has arrived, standing nearly 10" tall and totally in movie accurate scale with the 7" Robocop figures (sold separately) comes the Enforcement Droid 209 Series. ED-209 is fully posable and features incredible detail. Features include, articulated head, legs that slide up and down, hinged arm wing panels, posable cannon arms and pop-out rocket launcher on the right arm. Also features movie accurate sound effects and dialogue - press a button and hear the hydraulic machinery sounds, the guttural metal growls, "Warning, Throw Down Your Weapon, You Have 15 seconds to comply" and more! This is a massive figure and finally provides a worthy opponent for Robocop. Comes in deluxe closed box packaging featuring original illustrations and product photography highlighting key action features.

Sculpt:  The design of ED-209 is pretty close to the original.  Made entirely of plastic, the detail in his arms and legs look great.  His head covering is all plastic but made to look like a mesh screen covering his inside components.

Verdict: 8/10 - Pretty happy but wish there was some more detail.

Scale:  The height is 10" tall so he's pretty big which makes me really happy.  He's supposed to tower over Robocop and be this big meaning creature.  His height can change when you slide his legs up or down, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that.  they seem locked in place and if I try to slide them, I'm afraid 'll break it.

Verdict: 8/10 - Height works well with other 6-7" figures.  Really wish I could figure out how to change his legs height as well.

Paint:  ED-209's body is mostly silver with a blue airbrush.  All the black parts are painted and there are a few "tampo" screen printed decals like warning signs and such.

Verdict: 7/10 - Would've liked some more dirt and grime on him though, make it look likes he's been in a few fights.

Sound:  ED-209 comes with about 6 different sound FX.  The only problem is that they all sound like it came directly from a televised taped version of the original movie.  A little audio cleaning would have been nice.  They also are a little bit long.  Some gun fire, his growl and his typical "You have 15 second to comply" would have sufficed.

Verdict: 7/10 - Good but could have been better for the audio.

Articulation:  Ed-209 is pretty articulated but most of the time I feel like I'm going to break him.  Matter of fact, he came broken when I bought him from the store.  I opened the box and he was held with twist ties and a few plastic holders for his arms.  Somehow, the glue that held on his head connection to his body came right off.  Other than that, he's got a lot of articulation.  Arms, elbows, wrist, hips, head (now that I glued him back on), shoulder flaps, and supposedly legs.  I still can't figure out how to move his legs up and down and according to the online ad, they do move.  There was no instructions that came with him so hopefully  can find an online video to figure it out.

Verdict: 5/10 - Pretty good articulation but most of the time I feel like I'm going to break him at any point.  Would've also liked some articulation in his toes too.

Accessories:  No added accessories.  The much more expensive, like $400 more, at least comes with a busted, blown up arm.  This one, nada.

Verdict: 0/10 - Maybe some missiles or some fake gun blasts.

Overall:  I have to say I like my ED-209 just because he is who he is.  The price is ok too, around $60-70.  Really wish for some more added extras and it was a real downer to open the box to find a head that came off while shipping.

Verdict: 6/10 - Cool toy but how do I move the legs!!!
